چکیده

In the past 20 years the semiconductor laser has become a key device in optical electronics because of its pure output spectrum and high quantum efficiency. As the capabilities of laser diodes have grown, so has the range of applications contemplated for them. A great success in semiconductor lasers has been brought by the ability to artificially structure new materials on an atomic scale by using advanced crystal growth methods such as MBE and MOVPE. The laser performance successes gained using quantum wells in optoelectronic devices can be extended by adopting quantum wire and quantum dot structures. There have been several reports of successful lasing action in semiconductor dot structures within the past few years. In this article I will briefly review the recent progress in the development of quantum dot lasers. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Semiconductor Quantum Dot Nanostructures and their Roles in the Future of Photonics

This paper discusses the growth and the properties of semiconductor nanostructures based on self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). These QDs confine electrons or excitons in zero-dimension (0D), similar to an artificial atom or to an artificial molecule in the case of coupled QDs with vertical alignment. They are obtained in a simple step during the epitaxy of strained III-V semiconductors such as ...

Photoluminescence measurements of quantum-dot-containing semiconductor microdisk resonators using optical fiber taper waveguides

Optical fiber taper waveguides are used to improve the efficiency of room temperature photoluminescence measurements of AlGaAs microdisk resonant cavities with embedded self-assembled InAs quantum dots. As a near-field collection optic, the fiber taper improves the collection efficiency from microdisk lasers by a factor of 15–100 times in comparison to conventional normal incidence free-space c...

Quantum dot based mode locked lasers: performance and applications

Recent progress in semiconductor quantum dot based mode locked lasers is discussed. Sub-picosecond pulse generation and extremely low phase noise have been demonstrated for both InAs/GaAs and InAs/InP material systems. Applications include e.g. OTDM sources and frequency comb generation for WDM systems, all-optical clock recovery at high bit rate or microwave photonics . Keywordsself-assembled ...

Quantum dot lasers for silicon photonics [Invited]

We review recent advances in the field of quantum dot lasers on silicon. A summary of device performance, reliability, and comparison with similar quantum well lasers grown on silicon will be presented. We consider the possibility of scalable, low size, weight, and power nanolasers grown on silicon enabled by quantum dot active regions for future short-reach silicon photonics interconnects. © 2...

InAs Quantum Dots in Symmetric InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Wells

The self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) are the subject of substantial interest during last fifteen years due to both fundamental scientific and application reasons. In these systems, the strong localization of an electronic wave function leads to an atomic-like electronic density of states and permits to realize the novel and improved photonic and electronic devices. Microlectronic and opto...
